Two of the largest auction sites for MMORPGs virtual goods, MMOBay.net and Playerauctions.com, have been down for most of today. While I cannot say with certainty that PlayerAuctions is under attack, I can say that MMOBay.net is.
They have been under a botnet attack since 5 am this morning (est). Even though I’m not positive, it would be a pretty big coincidence if PlayerAuctions was down for another reason, so it’s likely they to are also under a botnet attack.
Who is attacking these sites and for what purpose has yet to be determined.
Player Auctions dispursed the following e-mail:

Currently our IT Service Management team are at work on rectifying the problem. We will send an update once service to the site has been restored.

My name is Jacob Aldaco, and I am the communications manager at PlayerAuctions. I’m writing to inform you that the problem at PlayerAuctions has been rectified.
There are a few minor service side problems that are being dealt with (some members are experiencing slow loading times, some can not log in, and some can not send payments) but we anticipate that all problems should be cleared up by the end of this week. We are on top of this, and are taking every precaution to above all keep all member transactions secured during this time.
@ Kort, recently I have ‘cleaned up’ our mailing lists. Previously we had over 600,000 contacts (and no, we do not buy mailing lists from other companies), however these are from registered accounts way back since 1999. I was receiving high amounts of spam, blacklisting, and bounces, so I took the initiative and did some major trimming. If you’d like to be place back on our mailing list, you can do so at our site.
